Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a sound perceived in the ears or the head, which does not have an external source or explanation. It is extremely common and almost everyone experiences Tinnitus at sometime in their lives.

It can start after a noisy concert or party or after being exposed to loud noise at work. It occurs in both children and adults with or without any hearing loss. Approximately 10% of the population has prolonged Tinnitus.

Luckily for most of us the Tinnitus usually subsides after a few hours or an overnight sleep.

However, when it persists and becomes intrusive it can severely affect the quality of life for the listener and this is when it becomes a problem.

The type of sound often described as a rushing, whistling, ringing, or banging is not the issue, what is relevant is the effect that it has on the listener.

If you experience troublesome Tinnitus you’re in very good company.

Barbara Streisand, Sting, Eric Clapton, Beethoven, Leonard Nimoy, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jack Straw MP, Oscar Wilde, Francisco Goya, Phil Collins, Vincent Van Gogh and many others have complained of Tinnitus.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy

Here at the Practice we offer a fully comprehensive Tinnitus Retraining Therapy Programme individually tailored to the sufferers needs including sound therapy and directive counselling where appropriate.

All patients for Tinnitus Retraining Therapy are required to be referred to us by their ENT or Neurology Consultant.

Hyperacusis & Sound Sensitivity

For a variety of reasons both adults and children can become very over sensitive to everyday sounds such as traffic, loud voices, vacuum cleaners etc.

Ordinarily these noises are loud to the listener but not uncomfortable but in some patients who are over sensitive to loud sounds they can feel uncomfortably loud and painful.

If the over sensitivity persists it can have a very disruptive effect on the listeners quality of life and intervention is needed.

You don’t have to have any form of hearing loss or Tinnitus to suffer with a sound sensitivity problem.

An individualised programme of directive counselling and specialised sound therapy is used to treat this condition so please ask your ENT Consultant to be referred to us for Hyperacusis or Sound Sensitivity Management
